Pros and Cons of Feeding Tripe

Postby wakeskate » Sun May 31, 2009 5:39 pm

Hi, we have been advised to stop feeding our whippet and greyhound tripe every day (once per day), because of its high protein level. However having looked at various sites on-line I can't see why it should have a negative affect ton heir behaviour and health. Can anyone shed any light on this for me please? :fido:

not really sure about feeding dogs tripe, my friend whos a dog breeder swears by tripe and has always fed her poodles on it, and her daughter feed her dogs tripe also, however when I went round to their house with my two dogs, Dylan sniffed the tripe and walked away, Riley thought he would eat some and then brought it back up an hour later when I got home!! So I suppose some dogs are alright on it and others arent?!

Like anything to do with dogs there's as many opinions as there are breeds.....many who do feed their dogs on(green) tripe include it with their main diet of something else. Check your dogs poo ....this needs to be solid most of the time to keep the anal glands working as they should. There needs to be something in the dogs diet that the dog can crunch or chew on for the sake of teeth maintenance.
Some variety is ok for the sake of the dogs digestive system.
Another key element to your dogs diet is its weight and how much exercise it gets.

I had to look up what tripe was, Digestive tract of other beasties. Thats usually the bits that an animal would go for in a kill along with heart, liver and all the other soft jucy bits. :cow:

Gosh food you feed the dog eek I've been looking into that as I've decided to change my dog food and eeek it's scary you have the extremes on each side the dog brand food people, the raw food feeders and then you have the people who debate each little ingredient in commercial food ect.

and sometime I wonder is the internet a blessing or a curse for this oh. I made my choice on what to feed my dog and he's seems to be doing ok. I keep an open mind and if evidence sugest that it would be detrimental or my dog seemed to be disagreeing with the food and losing condition, I would consider reviewing my desicion. :reading:

I have to ask did the person who said this give a reason why a high protien level is bad? or did they just say that high protien is bad. Personally if someone make a suggestion to me I like to know the reasoning behind it.

For some reason I always thought tripe was a :fish:

Thanks for your replies everyone. We were advised to take tripe out of their diet because the high protein levels could affect their joints and also give them high energy levels, however if you saw how much our dogs slept every day you wouldn't think that was the case at all! One of our dogs shows aggression when meeting other dogs on the lead, most of the time he is the most lovely dog but I think he is fearful and we are working on helping him get over this. This is where the suggestion to change the diet came from.

I think the first thing I would ask the person if they told me this is where they got thier information from. State their source so to speak.(Gosh I've been round my hubby to long and his editing of wikipedia.) So that if I was to consider a diet change I could read it or look up where they got there information from and make an informed descision if it is a repitible source. Even then I,d view it with wariness as even scientist ect can make wild claims.

What a delightful world we live. :(

Chibi J do you ask the question ''where did you get your information from...? '' every time someone tells you something you've never heard before..........?????? I presume you'd need to know where they got the information from as well - and so on. Exhausting stuff eh
Delightful company no doubt

As I said earlier the internet is it a blessing or a curse when I'm happily following a virtual trail I can lose entire evenings.

Gosh I've learnt to question most thing including myself. After working in a school and hearing what the delightful teachers said to children some wonderful misinformation now being passed down generations. I mostly look at things if it makes sense I shall live by them but I'm open to new thinking and if it means re-evaluating my mode of thought then so be it. Ok the current thinking that the world is a sphere is the most predominate mode of thinking but I haven't seen thats its round have I so for all I know it could be carrot shaped and its a mass conspiracy theory ! :) .

Your probably expecting the manic laughter now

Some days I think far to much.

We feed royal canin dry mixed with 500 g. raw - tripe, beef, lamb and occasionally raw liver or kidney etc. She loves it and does well on it. The only thing with tripe is that you don't want a kiss when she is done. :wolf:

I feed tripe with no problems to my lot. I do mix it with other meats though, like, minced beef, liver, heart, kidneys, chicken wings, minced chicken, lamb, rabbit etc. This is all fed raw, with a raw bone given every week too.

I think the main problem lies in feeding the same thing every day, there should be some variation!
