Walkies!

Postby Admin » Tue Jun 01, 2010 4:15 am

The Retired Greyhound Trust has joined forces with the Great British Greyhound Walk to launch a national Greyhound walk. Dog lovers and walkers will put their best foot forward to raise awareness of Greyhounds and have some fun at walks up and down the UK on June 20. Organiser Janet Peacock said: “The walks are designed to be great fun for all the family, whether you own a Greyhound, are considering a dog as a pet – or just fancy a good walk. They are a great opportunity for people who are thinking about getting a dog to come along and meet a Greyhound. They will have the chance to ask questions to Greyhound owners, walk the dogs and find out more about the joys of adopting a retired Greyhound. Anyone is welcome.”

What a fantastic day for greyhounds, lurchers and their owners. We had a total of 43 walks up and down the country from as far afield as Morayshire, Redruth, Liverpool and Woodbridge. Over 1600 greyhounds and lurchers went walking and the whole day has been stamped a HUGE success.

Greyhounds were introduced to the public and went on test drives. Lots of funds were raised and many new friendships formed.

This is the Chelmsford walk just before set off, all 106 hounds and their owners.

From what you are saying that sounds like an excellent doggy day out- people and their dogs doing what dogs do naturally - walking out in the fresh air, socialising and you all making money for a well worthy cause. No need for dogs competing against each other - waggiest tail, cleanest teeth, prettiest face - what an insult to the dog. Some of those dogs in the photo have probably competed more than enough in their lifetime and many suffered terribly as a result; you greyhound people deserve the utmost respect.
