Dogs Monthly has teamed up with the Middlesex University-accredited Cambridge Institute of Dog Behaviour & Training (CIDBT) to give away eight distance-learning courses. All come with credit points that can be used towards a Higher Education Qualification. There are two places available on each of the following four courses:
Course 1
The Pet Dog’s Mind
Designed for dog owners, this will provide you with an insight into your dog’s mind, the psychology behind why your pet exhibits the behaviour he does and the inherent drives that makes him what he is. Your dog will be easier to manage and train if you know the secrets of his mind!
Content: History and evolution of the domestic dog and how dogs learn, see, hear, taste, detect scents and use touch.
Duration: six months.

Course 2
Understanding Canine Care & Behaviour
Ideal as a foundation module for someone interested in entering the dog training and behaviour world. You’ll be encouraged to observe and participate in training classes and study trainers and their methods.
Content: Dog psychology, dog training, canine behaviour observation skills, understanding human/canine relationships and why dogs do what they do.
Duration: six months.
Usual cost: £425.
Course 3
Pet Home Sitting & Dog Walking
Looking after people’s dogs can be most rewarding and is one of the UK’s fastest-growing occupations. This qualification demonstrates your ability to care for clients’ pets in a responsible way and covers dogs, cats and other small pets.
Content: Starting a pet-sitting business, insurance requirements and your legal responsibilities, plus dog handling, walking and expectations of the typical family and their pets.
Duration: six months.
Usual cost: £295.
Course 4
An Introduction to the Theory of Dog Training
Aimed at anyone who wants to know more about the history and theory behind dog training and why trainers – and dogs – do what they do. For this course, you’ll need at least three months’ experience of being around dogs.
Content: How dogs learn, the various ways to condition your dog, what the various technical terms and training buzzwords mean and when to use them.
Duration: six months.
